GUUF Humanists Discussion Group

The GUUF Humanist Discussion Group meets to explore a wide range of topics through a humanist lens, fostering reason, compassion, and critical thinking.

Recent Discussion: Exploring Humanity Through Science

Our most recent meeting was held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 9:30 AM in the Founders Room. We took a fascinating tour through five current scientific discoveries—each offering a unique perspective on what it means to be human. Together, we examined themes touching on health, the search for life beyond Earth, ethics, and our shared future.

Topics included:

  • Groundbreaking Blood Protein Discovery – A new understanding of how haemoglobin functions, challenging previous assumptions and opening new avenues for treating respiratory illness. This inspired a reflection on the limits of human knowledge and the ethical implications of biological intervention.
  • NASA’s Latest Mars Findings: Signs of Past Life – New data suggesting ancient microbial life on Mars, reshaping our sense of human uniqueness and our responsibility toward life elsewhere.
  • International Grants Expanding Global Humanism – Initiatives promoting reason, compassion, and education worldwide, emphasizing the universal values of humanism and the importance of global cooperation.
  • Space Missions Shaping Our Future – Projects like NASA’s SPHEREx and the European Space Agency’s Space Rider, embody human curiosity and cooperation while inviting discussion about the ethics of sustainable space exploration.
  • Breakthrough Cure for Huntington’s Disease – A promising new drug raising questions about equitable access to medical progress and the humanist approach to alleviating suffering.
