Confucius: “to know what you know and to know what you don’t know, that is real wisdom.” Buddha: “Know well what leads you forward and what holds you back, and choose the path the leads to wisdom.” Philosophers and religious teachers alike respect and call people to seek wisdom, that elusive quality that lies out beyond knowledge, synthesizing what we know with tradition, reason, and reality. In the 21st century, with its abundant access to knowledge, the seeking of wisdom seems to be in short supply, and sorely needed.
