April 22, 1926 – October 25, 2020

Hilda Drennan Howerton, 94, died October 25, 2020.  She was born April 22, 1926 in McCormick County, SC and spent her childhood in Greenwood, SC.  She attended Erskine College, the University of Georgia, and Converse College.  A chemist and a teacher, she was dedicated to sharing her knowledge of science even beyond death with the donation of her body to the USC Medical School. 

Married to the late Glen Howerton in 1975, she became an avid supporter of Furman University art department. Most of all, Hilda loved gardening and enjoying the beauty of nature. She kept herself busy and agile maintaining the many gardens at her home at 100 Pace Street. She was most proud of her ability to squat at 90 years of age and often referred to herself as the Happy Hoer.  She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Pressley, her step-daughter Devery Howerton, seven grandchildren and two great grandsons.
