Approved by the Board of Trustees March 2025

This policy applies to all events, programs, meetings, etc. taking place on
the Greenville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (GUUF) campus. It also pertains to those events held by GUUF at other public venues off campus. This policy is enacted to:
● Minimize GUUF’s liability and the possibility of an alcohol related tragedy.
● Ensure that no alcohol is served to anyone under 21 years of age.
● Make events comfortable for drinkers and non-drinkers.
● Ensure that alcohol is not abused at official GUUF events; and
● Ensure that GUUF is in compliance with South Carolina Dept. of Revenue Alcohol Beverage Licensing requirements and all other applicable laws and regulations.

If alcoholic beverages are sold at an event or explicitly included in an event admission fee, or contributions for beer and wine are explicitly solicited at the event, a SC ABL temporary beer and wine or liquor license is required. Alcoholic beverages may be served at an official Fellowship event or at a rite of passage event for active members/friends, provided they are furnished free with no explicit payment required for them.

The host for any Fellowship event where alcohol will be served must carefully consider the need for and then verify that proper liquor liability insurance coverage is in place.

For any event held by any person or entity other than the Fellowship, including those held by active members/friends, groups, and GUUF Affiliates, and at which alcohol is served, the responsible person or group must provide proof of Liquor Liability Insurance with a minimum amount of $1,000,000 with the Fellowship named as an additional insured. If a fee is to be charged for the alcoholic beverage, the appropriate license must be obtained, and a copy of that license must be provided to the Fellowship Administrator at least ten (10) days prior to the event.

In order for alcohol to be served, the following must be adhered to:
● All events serving alcohol that are GUUF sponsored and/or open to the public on the GUUF campus must be advertised as an event serving alcohol.
● Non-alcoholic beverages must also be served and attractively and prominently displayed.
● Bring-Your-Own-Alcohol (BYOB) for personal consumption must be approved by the GUUF event organizer prior to the event. The event must be advertised as a BYOB event. BYOB is only allowed when appropriate and consumed by adults over the age of 21 only.
● Meetings, services, and events involving fellowship governance (such as annual congregational meetings or cottage meetings) on or off campus, are alcohol-free and are ineligible for members or non-members to BYOB.
● No alcohol is to be served at a GUUF sponsored event, on or off campus, prior to 4 PM. This includes Bring-Your-Own-Alcohol (BYOB.) The only exception will be rite of passage events or non-GUUF sponsored events for which a SC ABL temporary beer, wine or liquor license AND Liquor Liability Insurance as prescribed above has been obtained.
● Food must be served along with alcohol.
● The area in which alcohol is being served always must be staffed by someone over the age of 21.
● Alcohol may only be served by an adult over the age of 21. A current, valid government-issued photo ID with a birthdate may be requested of patrons before being served alcohol.
● No alcohol may be served to anyone under the age of 21. No exceptions.
● An adult over the age of 21 must be designated to monitor consumption and behavior at the event. This designated monitor or a member of leadership or staff may end alcohol serving to all persons at any time if the consumer exhibits unruly behavior, impairment or intoxication. If someone becomes intoxicated, they will be asked to leave campus or the off-campus venue immediately and will be advised not to drive or operate any vehicle and to take a taxi or other transportation.
● Storage of alcoholic beverages at GUUF is not allowed under any circumstances. All excess alcohol must be removed from the GUUF campus immediately following the end of the event.
