Charlie was born in Clearwater, FL in February of 1928. He grew up with hard working parents and 3 siblings on an orange grove that provided them lots of outdoor adventure. Florida life for a relatively poor family was difficult, yet slow and quiet in the 30’s and 40’s. Charlie was different though, he wanted more for himself and dreamed of stepping out from “the family norm”. No one he knew could afford higher education, nor could he, but he devoured encyclopedias and maps and dreamed of seeing the world.

In the early 50’s, Charlie met Karina, an immigrant from Germany. They married and raised one daughter, Sabrina, born in 1955. From then on, during summer vacations, the 3 explored the US and most all of Europe. Working 6 days a week, Charlie spent any available free time with Sabrina building forts, riding bicycles, playing ball, swinging rope, and having lots of fun on the beach.

He had a gift for growing things, the yard was always blooming and the most lush green of any in the neighborhood. Charlie turned his talent into a career at Sears in their garden department. He earned numerous accolades and promotions, but never accepted any that would take him away from tending the plants or advising customers. He disliked the thought of working in an enclosed office all day.

Due to serious medical issues, Charlie retired early. He and Karina moved to North Carolina and spent the next 15 years as snowbirds spending 8 months in NC and winters in northern Florida. He continued his voracious appetite for knowledge where and when he could, and doted on his grandson.

He died in 1999 after an extended struggle with cancer and CMT. Everyone who knew Charlie, admired him for his “never give up” attitude and strong moral integrity. He loved his family. He was the best father ever!
