A Time to Break Silence—Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was murdered on April 4, 1968, one year to the day after what some called his most powerful, dangerous, and divisive speech entitled — “Beyond Vietnam: A Time To Break Silence.” In that speech, King criticized the leadership of our nation and called us as citizens for a “radical revolution of values.”
As we celebrate Memorial Day Weekend, this service will provide us with an opportunity to examine Dr. King’s profound insights regarding the interconnectedness of racism, militarism, and extreme materialism. Our challenge is to offer a prophetic critique of this aspect of our national culture without calling into question the patriotism and sacrifice of those who have served or do serve in the military.
