Special Event: 17 Nov. 9:30am

Please join us on Sunday November 17 at 9:30 in the Founder’s Room for a very special event.  The Adult Religious Education Committee in collaboration with the Humanist Group welcome a one-man panel to investigate the use, or misuse, of religion in the Clemson athletic programs.

Our guest will be Dr. Peter Cohen.  He is a Senior Lecturer in Religion at Clemson University and will be with us to discuss the topic as it was highlighted in a September 4, 2019 Sports Illustrated article.  The article asks:  “Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has made Christianity the foundation of his program, using faith to bring together players and coaches. Has he gone too far?”

This article references the November, 2013 article in the Chronical of Higher Education entitled “With God on our Side,” in which Coach Swinney is quoted as saying:  “I’m a Christian. If you have a problem with that, you don’t have to be here.”

Dr. Cohen will guide us through an investigation of the facts, circumstances and ramifications of this position, which is not isolated to Clemson.  There will be time for interaction as well.
