Starts January 24th. Six sessions. Using video, readings, and discussion, this course offers an overview of some of the most significant issues, people and moments in UU history in the early days of our country, giving newcomers and old-timers alike a unique perspective on the development of our nation and the significant role of our religious forebears. At a time in our history when the religious right is laying claim to our nation, these videos may help educate and support Unitarian Universalists in claiming the role our religious forebears played in forming our United States and to carrying forward the cause of liberty and justice for all.

Some history reading for those so inclined. These are complete texts:

Traditions with a Wink: Middle School lounge upstairs. Contact Kris Beliakoff (271-4883). 6th-8th grade

“”Traditions with a Wink teaches an understanding of UU faith that can replace the vague “anything we want to” statement with “We come from a long tradition of questioning and searching. We come from a long tradition of loving kindness and good works.” We have powerful stories and visions of hope. It is time to share them with our young teens as they begin the process of shaping their own faith.”” – Kate Tweedie Erslev, author

Leadership and Personal Spiritual Practices: Senior high lounge. Contact Kris Beliakoff (271-4883). 10th-12 grade

Designed as the next level for those teens who have completed Coming of Age (though relevant to all teens of this age), this class searches through the social and religious joys and complexities living in a religiously diverse world create and asks, how can you emerge a leader at GUUF and in the larger (even world) community? This course may culminate in a trip to the UU office of the United Nations in New York City.

Spirit Play: Upstairs RE Classrooms. Contact Julienne Correa (prontolabels@yahoo.com). Children 3 years old to 3rd Grade

Spirit Play is a child-centered education program based on the Montessori philosophy. After an initial story, children are encouraged to choose their own work for the class period. Spirit Play builds a program that is both free and responsible by making a commitment to freedom in spiritual exploration and responsibility in conducting that search.

Living the Promise: Upstairs RE Classroom. Contact Kris Beliakoff (271-4883). Children 4th - 6th grade

Living the Promise was developed to give Unitarian Universalist children not only a grounding in Judaism, the roots of their own faith, but also a variety of opportunities to explore and clarify their values. As they learn about major people and events of the Hebrew Scriptures, students of this course probe ideas relating to the sanctity of life and the imperative to live responsibly.
